Super Macho’s advantages vs. two popular energy beverages
Super Macho Ingredient Analysis
B1
Vitamin B1 (Thiamine) is a water-soluble vitamin that is essential for fat, carbohydrate and protein metabolism, as well as the production of cellular energy (ATP). It is also required for the metabolism of certain amino acids (called the “branched chain” amino acids; valine, isoleucine, and leucine) into energy in active muscle cells. Short-term shortages of vitamin B1 can increase lactic acid buildup and muscle fatigue.
• Essential for the breakdown of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into energy
• Necessary for metabolizing certain (“branched chain”) amino acids into energy in the muscles
• Short term shortages of vitamin B1 can increase muscle fatigue by the buildup of
the metabolic waste product lactic acid
B2 and B3
Vitamins B2 (Riboflavin) and B3 (Niacin or Niacinamide) are essential for hundreds of reactions in the human body, including the breakdown and synthesis of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, and the creation of chemical energy (ATP). Vitamins B2 and B3 are also necessary for the metabolism of our antioxidant defenses, as well as the activation of other vitamins (like folic acid and B6).
• Essential for hundreds of reactions in human metabolism
• Required nutrients for converting carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into cellular
energy (ATP)
• Used to recycle cellular antioxidants and protect cells from oxidative damage
B5
Like several other B Vitamins, Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic acid) is required for breakdown of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins into energy. However, it has some unique functions as well: it is used to make heme, the compound that carries oxygen throughout the body; it is also used by the liver to detoxify harmful compounds.
• Essential for metabolic reactions that burn fats for energy; also used in fatty acid
synthesis to store energy.
• Essential for reactions that detoxify harmful compounds
• Used to make heme, the molecule that carries oxygen throughout the body
B6
Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine, Pyridoxal, or Pyridoxamine) has a major role in the synthesis and breakdown of amino acids, the building blocks of proteins. B6 is also required for the synthesis of several neurotransmitters and hormones, and helps to breakdown
glycogen, a stored cellular fuel that can provide energy for the muscles and
brain. Age can increase the likelihood of B6 deficiency.
• Used to metabolize amino acids into energy, also necessary for synthesizing
amino acids, neurotransmitters, and hormones
• Helps to break down glycogen, a stored cellular fuel that can provide energy for
the muscles and brain.
• Age can increase the likelihood of B6 deficiency.
B12
Besides its roles in the breakdown of fats and proteins into energy, Vitamin B12 is critical for the proper function of neurons and the synthesis of red blood cells. B12 is poorly absorbed from the diet, and absorption can decrease significantly with age.
• Critical for synthesis of neurons and red blood cells
• Absorption decreases with age
• Low levels of B12 may be quite common in adults
Folate
Folic acid is a useful metabolic building block for the synthesis of amino acids and
nucleic acids (DNA). Like B12, folate is of critical importance the healthy propagation
of red blood cells.
• Essential for the synthesis of proteins and DNA
• Critical for synthesis of red blood cells
Tyrosine
Tyrosine a protein-forming (proteogenic) amino acid that is used to make several of the enzymes that are important for proper metabolism. Tyrosine is conditionally essential in the human diet. This means that under some conditions, the human body cannot make sufficient tyrosine to satisfy all its metabolic needs, and additional tyrosine must be obtained through the diet. Apart from its role in protein synthesis, tyrosine is used to synthesize the thyroid hormone thyroxine, the pigment melanin, the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine, and the endorphins (natural analgesics).
• Conditionally essential amino acid.
• Used to synthesize several important hormones and neurotransmitters, including
thyroxine, dopamine, norepinephrine, and endorphins.
• High doses (several grams) may help with adaptation to physical stress
Taurine
Taurine is a unique sulfur-containing amino acid that is not used for protein synthesis, but has a variety of other roles in metabolism. Taurine is used for making bile acids, which are used for the absorption of fats and fat-soluble vitamins, as well as for excreting excess cholesterol. Taurine helps to regulate the amount of water and calcium that flows into cells, which is of significant importance to the proper function of skeletal muscles.
• Used to make bile acids, which help to absorb fats and rid the body of excess
cholesterol
• Helps to regulate the amount of water and calcium that flows into cells, which is
of significant importance to the proper function of skeletal muscles.
Panax ginseng
Panax ginseng is a deciduous perennial that has been used medicinally for thousands of years throughout southeast Asia. It is often classified as an adaptogen, a compound that increases resistance to biochemical, mental, and physical stress. Although the mechanism by which Panax ginseng works is not fully known, there has been some suggestion that compounds in the root extracts (called ginsenosides) may have immune modulating activity.
• Thousands of years of traditional usage in southeast Asia
• “Adaptogenic” herb that may increase the body’s resistance to biochemical, mental,
and physical stress
• Ginseng roots contain compounds (called ginsenosides) that may have
immunemodulating activity.
Zinc
Zinc is an essential trace element (“mineral”) in human nutrition with a multitude of important functions throughout the body. Low zinc has been associated with decreases in testosterone levels, and may also reduce production of growth hormone and the metabolism of thyroid hormones, and decrease the efficacy of the immune system. Zinc deficiency is prevalent throughout the world; Americans are on average marginally zinc deficient. Zinc status is an important consideration for active people, as zinc excretion is increased during strenuous exercise.
• Essential trace mineral used in a multitude of enzymatic reactions
• Necessary for proper levels of testosterone, and healthy function of the immune
system and thyroid
• Sufficient dietary zinc is an important consideration for active people, as zinc excretion
is increased during strenuous exercise
Orchic Substance
• A glandular extract from bovine testis
• Testicular extracts have been used for millennia in traditional medical systems
